Tom Breiding - AmeriSon Highway Tours: Highway Tour Journal

"Let's Go For a Ride" - March 30, 2008

I remember my parents would say this and my three younger brothers and I would pile into our VW Microbus anxious for an adventure ahead. Unlike the long boring rides to our vacation destinations, we never knew where we'd wind up on these short, impromptu jaunts...climbing narrow dirt roads to exotic heights with breathtaking views from West Virginia hills, rolling past the huge Pike Island dam on the Ohio River, or winding over the hilltops along Route 250 in Ohio with it's shops and burma shave signs. Route 250 was one of my favorites because we always stopped at Walker's Ice Cream store, which my parents insisted was the only place around that still made ice cream by hand.

In this journal, you can read about the sites and attractions along highways like old 250 where I now travel to perform my songs. I'll share with you the special places you will want to sample if you choose to "go for a ride" and travel one of these great American highways.
